Considering Greene's criteria for generating inquiry based research
questions, write an open-ended research question that you are interested
in pursuing for the rest of the term.
Greene's Criteria:
1. The question can be answered with the tools you have
2. The question conveys a clear idea of who you are answering the question for
3. The question is organized around an issue
4. The question explores "how," "why," or "whether," and the "extent to which."
5. There are no prepackaged answers for the question
6. The question grows out of some issue or fundamental tension
After you write your research question, you are required to deliver some
feedback to at least three of your peers. Your job as a reviewer of
your peer's questions is to aid in the development and progression of
the person's research project. How can the question be phrased in a
better way? Are there offshoot questions that might help the person
consider another angle to the question? If the question doesn't meet
some of Greene's characteristics, what can be done to help? Might there
be an interesting research method you could suggest? When you reply to a
peer, you must reply to a peer who has less than three responses. It is
important that everyone get responses from at least three people.
What is most important to me is that you are pursuing some subject that
interests you. If you are really interested in your research project,
this class will be much more worth your while. If you need inspiration,

of bloggers and or the editorial sections of some online news papers. You

Question:
To what extent does someones social class affect their position on the currently controversial "Stand Your Ground" laws?
Hi Alexandra,
DeleteHow would you expect social class to affect one's position on Stand Your Ground?' Perhaps you could delve further into this by delving into why the Stand Your Ground Law divides people along social class lines?
This appears similar to the piece we watched on "Stop and Frisk." Black and Latino people from major cities see it as blatant infringement of civil rights, but whites have heard about it before (but may not even know it is still going on).
The Constitution is a very good place to refer to regarding this topic. Also, Thomas Jefferson's quote of "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" in the Declaration of Independence. We all have these rights, and social class is not a factor in that, so I would definitely focus on the fact that under (a number of) certain circumstances, legal authorities may lead those they are approaching to believe they do not have these rights, instead of asking if it actually affects their position.

What do you mean by controversial humor? It also seems that societal background can mean a wide variety of things. I do, however, believe that investigating humor is an excellent idea. What about investigating satire? Perhaps you could look into the dynamism of satire and its ability to deliver a cutting humorous line while also making an interesting point.

That's a really good point, and I really like the idea about looking into the dynamism of satire! What I was specifically referring to about controversial humor was racially charged humor, and possibly also humor related to aspects of sexism. I think that looking at these two channels of humor through the lens of people's socio-economic backgrounds would allow for quite the interesting study I think, but in order for me to successfully be able to do it, I agree with you that I need to come up with a more specific topic than just "controversial humor"

How do sexual orientation, gender identity, and biological sex
relate to each other and how do they individually and collectively influence relationships?
Keep in mind there is also gender role, the way a particular society sees the way genders should behave. For instance, traditional American gender roles, around the 1950's, viewed the women as housekeepers and such, and men as the providers. Those are gender roles. They are not only affected by society, but by religion, and individual family values. You should look at gender roles in your study as well. You could also look at how these four topics change over time, throughout different religions, and even in different countries. Good luck!

An aspect you can look at is what different parenting styles seem to have a greater affect on a child's personality; what cultures seem to have a more direct influences on a child, and what cultures seem to be the most liberal in what they let a child believe; and does gender or demographic have any affect on it? Very interesting topic, do let me know if we're all indoctrinated robots.
DeleteInteresting topic! This is something that could help show the right way to raise a child as well as the wrong way. Maybe you could look up the different ways people from different cultures and different backgrounds raise their children as well as compare and contrast your findings. It's much easier to find similarities and bunch the different characteristics into groups and go from there.

I like this one a lot actually. How do you plan to conduct your research? Maybe you could study small children and their imaginative minds to older ones. Or have a child from a less religious family and a child from a very religious family. This is very interesting and I wish I could help you a little more, but it's a little bit challenging.

I think this is an interesting topic! You could have two "focus groups": one of older kids and ask them what they were taught or what they remember from shows they watched, and one with kids that are currently watching educational shows and ask them what they learn from these shows, then compare the two.
DeleteThis is a interesting topic indeed! I would think that the educational shows today might have a different social and cultural impact than shows back 10-15 years. TV shows adapt to the culture surrounding us and broadcast that to the viewers. So they may have a very different impact indeed!

Some shows today try to teach life lessons that were not that necessary to portray ten or fifteen years ago, such as the increasing problem of teen pregnancy so television shows for teens today or showing this and the consequences more than the past. Like Kayla said, two focus groups can be very helpful.

That would be an interesting study. Are people with Reptiles more adventurous? Or are dog people more active? You could also cross reference Pet Owners vs. non-Pet Owners and see how they differ. Also more than just personality, it could affect certain views on relationship bonds, i.e. life partner, children, friends, etc.

DeleteI think this is a really good topic! You could probably go into a direction such as a nature versus nurture topic! You can also ask yourself, or bring up in your research, if an abuser was brought up in a relatively "common" upbringing, what do the abusers themselves say about how they got involved with drugs. I think there could be a never ending string of conversation about this topic, so again, excellent question!
This is a really interesting topic that made me thing for a minute. I'm pretty sure there are many different things like something that happened in their past, which is a common factor, that triggered such actions upon these abusers. Try to bring more things to the table than what people already know. For instance, what I said above shouldn't be further elaborated.

Very interesting, another aspect to possibly look into would be comparing the rhetoric between the push for being personally environmentally cautious in comparison with that of national and governmental movements. Nice topic, this is something I often think about. Perhaps an interesting angle to view this topic would be to ask: "Does technology have negative affects on social interaction, if any, and if so are these affects purposefully exponentiation to fulfill some sort of larger agenda?"

I think this is a good subject to research. I know a lot of people that are concerned with common core standards. I would definitely interview teachers who have taught for a long time, so you can ask about the time before common core was implemented and the effect they saw and students, and then after it was implemented and the effect they saw then.

You can also interview some students, perhaps in different age groups, and question them on the different types of teaching methods that their instructors use. Question:
Why are increasing numbers of animals sacrificed for research, especially for repetitive experiments? Why can't alternatives, such as computer modules or cell cultures, replace animal experiments. Does animal experiments truly benefit humans?
I think this is not only interesting but something that is affecting society negatively and needs to be looked at. I think it would be beneficial to look at the number of animals that are being sacrificed and of what species. I would i also try to look at what other technologies can be used to help with these experiments, if any as well as the possibility of cloning animals in order to conduct research on.
DeleteI think because, we can never completely understand a living thing, there are so many factors in a living being that can alter the expected result. The only true way of proving or consolidating something is to put it through a live animal subject. I think scientists feel more comfortable by testing animals than taking a chance on new and alternative technology, risking the possibility of a human getting sick or dying. If such a mistake were to occur, major law suites would probably play out.

Perhaps you could examine as to how the media sways public opinion on this issue through their rhetoric, or, depending on your available resources, you could go deeper and analyze how the rhetoric affects your peers.

Whether media is portraying steroids as positive or negative, some players will use them, some will get caught and be outcasted, some will get away with it, and some just won't use them at all. However if you research about if the media is warping the image into a drug used to cheat or so negatively that it makes fans believe anyone who uses them should be outcasted, you could research on positives and the true effects of steroids if they are deserving of such a bad reputation.

Maybe one of the first question you should ask is, 'do people know of the reality of the health improvements resulting from positive dieting and if so, do they eat well and if not, why?'
DeleteYour question is assuming that people always have rationally thought through the things in their lives, namely their diets. The best "justification" for sticking to these less-healthy food choices will often be price, convenience, and habit, but I don't think anyone is going to disagree with the fact that a properly balanced diet makes you healthier. A sad fact of life is that many people do not rationalize through their decisions.

Do sports cause less time for social activities to take place beyond the sports field? This is extremely interesting, although can become opinionated on the persons passions towards the sport they participate in. Those who become professional athletes automatically receive high paying jobs, but what about those who have focused their whole life on the sport but do not make the professional status? The ratio of those who make it to professional athletes is incredibly low opposed to those who just end up playing in high school and college.

DeleteWhen considering the contrast between the "American Diet" and the "Asian Diet" something you could do in addition is look at the American take on Asian foods. To elaborate, the differences of American Asian cuisine against the purist Asian cuisine. Another interesting facet you could look at is what Asian food has America caught on to more compared to others. For example, Japanese and Chinese restaurants are far more common around here than Korean restaurants. Not only that but the food at these Chinese and Japanese restaurants seem to indeed be more Americanized renditions of the cuisine, while Korean food tends to be much more traditional in it's cuisine. What is the cause of this?

Why are new transportation modes so hard to become common place, what is hindering our progress?
Very interesting, recently saw an article about Elon Musk's hyperloop proposal. Seemed like a reasonable new alternative to long distance travel. Would be interesting to see ideas like these compared to current modes. ReplyDeleteCool! Maybe you should compare it to the NCAA which has a smaller fan base because it's restricted to colleges. And see how the culture, because it's so varied, affects the NFL rather than the NCAA because it's a smaller sub-culture.
DeleteInteresting topic! For starters, you could compare how the rules of the NFL were in 2000 to this current year. I'm pretty sure that you will find some change in the rules and how the football players have to play. With these findings, you could look up major evens that happened and see if the actions correlate with each other.
DeleteFirst you should look at the question through both the fans, then the players, and then the actual NFL organization that. You should look for connections to see if either the players or the fans influences even affect the NFL's decision making, and if you come up with positive correlation then see if a certain group of fans favored that change. This is a good topic in both the NFL and the NCAA because of the concussion lawsuit that just got settled with the NFL, and the new defenseless player penalty in the NCAA. Good luck!

This is a very interesting topic. Another question you could ask could be why do people even want genetically modify a living organism, is it so they can feel powerful? What is their motive for doing such a thing? Is it helpful? Is there a purpose for it?

DeleteGreat topic! There's a lot you can touch on and expand on with it. Perhaps you could talk about some of the reasons why people are so against it. (For example, religious beliefs.) But then you could also mention how beneficial it could be in the medical field. Really explain the pros and cons and state your opinions on each of them.

How badly does gaining or losing a large percent of your body mass affect your health or the future of your health? Is gaining or losing more detrimental?
How will you frame this in a way that you can easily investigate your topic and find the answer? Losing a large percent of your BMI may be detrimental if you do it quickly through radical dieting, but it might be necessary for someone morbidly obese to do it over a long stretch of time. I believe you should expand the topic, but it's a good one! :)
DeleteI think you should broaden this a little more than just one or the other. Maybe look at what factors make a person gain a lot of weight or lose a lot of weight. How stress could make this happen and maybe even the ages where you are more likely to have a drastic weight change based on media or environmental factors. Do people care more about their appearance at a younger or older age etc.
DeleteThis is a very interesting topic but I agree that you should expand it. You could research about the financial factors that effect body mass. Those that are going through rough times because of the economy can't afford to buy many groceries which in turn makes people lose body mass if there not eating properly.

DeleteSomething you could pay attention to during the course of your research is what cultural aspects consistently seem to catch on the quickest amongst other cultures. Alongside that you could look at not only how has culture changed, but what was the physical means of which the culture was able to spread from one region to another. Finally, take note of what cultures seem to have the largest global influence, and what cultures they have symbiotic relations with (if any). The topic you picked has many facets to it; be sure to have a confident framework to work within.
Hello, very interesting subject to look into! Another aspect you could perhaps look into would be the impact of globalization and how our current connectivity across the globe is perhaps watering down cultural differences. Is our current culture becoming less distinguishable as cultural aspects are merging around the world? It will be difficult to find good, objective sources, but this is an interesting topic. Keep your resources in mind as you conduct your study. I really like your research topic, definitely interesting and related to my topic. You ask how much of a factor external environments play on transsexualism, and I think it might also be helpful to ask specifically what external factors influence transsexualism.

LOVE the topic, I'm doing a similar one. A problem that Longhany addressed with me though is that this topic is hard to investigate thoroughly, as we do not have access to a lab. Surveying people's attitudes and motivations regarding nutrition would be a much easier topic.
DeleteI think your first question would be easiest to answer through surveys and does not really have a complete prepackaged answer. You could also ask if those who make more nutritious decisions are happier than those who don't. For your third question there is evidence that genetically modified soy causes adverse affects on people, not sure if it has less nutrients or not.

ReplyDeleteEveryone has different things that motivate them in life, some pursue what they love, others pursue money, and some people want to change the world and help people. You should peobably lookin in to specific majors. Majors like art, theater, and even broadcast journalisim are majors that are taken up because of passion, but majors like buissiness administration and psychology there are more people with less liking for the subject not all of them but many of them are just in it for the money.

What might make them change their major? Then ask upperclassman if they have stuck with the major they chose when they first came in or have they changed it? If so why? How many times?

DeleteThis is a good topic because as college students, we do take advantage of technology these days. You can probably get a few people together and do a focus group and interview students about their daily use and how it affect their lives. Do they suffer without it when their iphone or ipad dies? Also consider the psychological effects of the use of technology.
