Working With Human Subjects- Informed Concent (Due before 11:59pm on Oct. 21st)

Working with human subjects can be tricky business, but luckily for us, you will not be poking or prodding any of your research subjects (so there should be minimal risk to those you plan to interview, survey, or experiment with).

With that said, it is still critical that you disclose information to the human subjects you are working with. Universities have developed an Internal Review Board (IRB) system to make sure researchers comply with local, state, and federal ethics standards. As students who are in a first-year writing course, you do not have to complete IRB training to work with human subjects, but it is critically important that you disclose your intentions in writing to the people you are working with.

Please review the following information provided by Colorado State University:

http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/page.cfm?pageid=1426

Upon reviewing the link above, you are tasked with developing an informed consent disclosure form to give to any participants you are studying. The site above gives plenty of information about what should appear in your disclosure form. Participants should sign the form and return it to you. You should provide each participant with an additional copy if said participant wants it for his/her records.

If your research involves textual analysis and you are not working with human subjects, please write a detailed outline about how your textual analysis will work.

I recommend you create your disclosure form as a word document and then paste it into the text box of this blog space.

Here is another link to a Google Images page that has many examples of Informed Consent Forms:

  1. Consent to Participate in Research
    ENC 1102-0039

    Researcher: Eleana Alvarez

Project: My project is to determine how individuals under the age of nineteen feel about themselves after being exposed to different body image related photos/media. Information gathered from the survey that will be provided will be then analyzed further to understand what different body types do to different individuals upon viewing.

Purpose: The media's portrayal of the perfect body is becoming extremely problematic in our society and for teens and children growing up in this generation. This experiment will reveal how, due to television and media exposure, different body types make people feel upon being exposed to them and why they feel this way. This is all to help understand the poisonous influences the media is inflicting upon young people and their bodies/bodies different from their own and how the media is making it seem as though body type is a direct reflection of personality. The experiment will also explore eating disorders to see just how common they are becoming, what people think of them, and why they are occuring.

Procedure: You will be participating in a survey after viewing a series of video clips and images filled with different body types. Some of those will be the "ideal" type- thin, fit, strong. Some of those will be more average bodies, and overweight bodies. After viewing the series of media, you will then take the survey that will be asking you how you feel about yourself after viewing the images and video clips. You will be asked why, as well. You will then be asked to answer questions that regard your opinion on personality type and body type, and how much you believe they correlate. Finally you will be asked questions regarding eating disorders. Questions about strange eating behavior, why it happens, if it has happened to you, and why you have felt the need to do this.

Risks: There are no risks involved in this experiment. All I ask is for your time and honesty.

    Thank you

I agree to participate in the "Media, Body Image, and Eating Disorders" survey experiment

  2. Project: An in depth examination of the opinions of students and adults alike in their subconscious choices of humor preference.

Purpose: To attempt to decipher central themes or causes that effect what people find humorous.

Participant Help: You will be asked to watch three clips of humor, one that is family friendly, one that is just regular humor, and one that will likely offend you or go against things that you believe. After watching these, you will fill out a brief, yet detailed, questionaire asking a few questions to gather research from how you enjoy, or didn't enjoy, the clips that you were asked to watch.

Risk: There is no risk involved, though you may be offended by some of the humor that you are asked to view.

By signing this document you agree to participate in my project "The What's and Why's of Humor", and you agree that I am allowed to use your results when explaining my research in a public forum.

  4. Project: My project is to determine if students with different majors have similarities based on what motivated them to choose that specific major. I believe that there is more to why a student chose one thing to do for the rest of their lives other than “they have a passion for it”. I believe that for others, there is something that has happened to them in their past that may lead to why or why they wouldn’t major in a specific field.

Purpose: To find, compare and contrast the motivations of different college students that have different majors to pick that specific major. This information may help students with undecided majors to see how they are similar and also not so similar to the people I will be conducting my research on. The participants will be given surveys based on the reasons why they selected their major it can vary from things that that may have happened to the student, whether positive or negative or from childhood or recent event. There will also be other questions based on what major they absolutely don’t like and why because these things can have similar but opposite reasoning behind them.

Risks: There are no risks towards participants involved in this project.

Benefits: This study will further the conversation on students motivations as far as picking their majors. It could possibly help students like myself who aren't too sure about their majors to look into what motivates people that are sure about what they want to do in life. By viewing this information,

By signing this document you agree to participate in my research, “Students’ Majors & Motivations”, along with allowing me to use the results from this research in my inquiry based research paper.

    Thanks for your time!

Project: The project focuses on whether or not the implementation of common core standards have impacted teaching procedures today and if these standards have a positive or negative effect on students’ learning. The information given from the participant will help close any gaps that have not yet been closed with this fairly new research topic.

Purpose: The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of nationwide standards implemented in grade k-12. There has been much debate over whether or not these standards are age appropriate for the students as well as if they are fitting for the teachers. Most of the research that has been done is from an outsider’s point of view. By speaking to a teacher the audience of the paper will have firsthand information on these standards. This will help people, not only working inside the school system, but everyone, understand the positive and negative effects of the CCSS.

Procedure: The participant will be ask a series of extended response questions regarding lesson plans, teaching methods, and student learning. Their names will be changed to protect anything that they say for or against the CCSS. There is no right or wrong answer to the questions, the goal is to better understand the major groups that will be affected by these standards.

Risks: There are no risks involved in this research project, all I need is your cooperation.

By signing this document you agree to participate in the research project regarding Common Core State Standards as well as allowing the researcher to use any information given throughout the interview.

  13. Project: My project is about people’s perceptions of violent video games. I think that with research being done on the subject, almost nothing has been done as far as discussion and focus on how people view the topic. I think that most people who are against violence in video games are those who have never been involved with them and the people who defend them are those who use them often and are more involved with them.

Purpose: To find information from both sides of the argument and compare what the opinions are of participants from both sides. Comparing these opposing views instead of focusing on one side helps to provide as unbiased results as possible and helps to analyze what the overall public may feel about the topic.

Participant Help: You will be given a survey asking questions that would determine your involvement with video games. There would then be questions that ask you about your perception of violence in video games and analyze your view of violent video games in general, as well as what it is that may cause that view. The end of the survey would ask if you are willing to participate in an open discussion and, if so, there would then be a time scheduled in which participants would meet together to discuss their views and opinions on the matter to help bring out information that may not be possible to learn through a survey.

Risks: There are no risks to participants involved in this research project.

By signing this document you agree to participate in my project “Perceptions of Violence in Video Games”, and you agree that I am allowed to use the results in the paper I will be writing on the subject.

My research into video game narrative will take the form of a textual analysis: I'll be looking at how video game narrative correlates with how narrative structure is defined by Joseph Campbell in his monomyth--the idea of the Hero's Journey. To do this, I'll be looking at two recent video game titles--"Beyond: Two Souls" and "The Last of Us"--and holding their narrative up to what Campbell has defined.
The first step in doing this will be to obtain extensive knowledge of Campbell's monomyth itself, as well as how it has been refined for use in cinema.

I picked the two games that I did not only because they do an amazing job of exemplifying the hero's journey, but also because they are different enough from each other to show the variation in games today; The gameplay in "The Last of Us" makes it a more traditional game in the general publics eyes--you kill people, shoot people, sneak around, build guns, etc.--and yet despite this cliché it still delivers a powerful and engaging story. The gameplay in "Beyond: Two Souls" is highly unique and differs quite substantially from the traditional idea of a game; it is the perfect game to analyze to show how diverse and special games these days can be.

Thus, the next step will be analyzing the aforementioned game titles, and making notes on how they fit into Campbell's idea of the Hero's Journey. To do this I'll replay both titles and take note of how closely their narrative fits the monomyth along with any other noteworthy aspects such as the marriage of gameplay and narrative.

  16. Friendships Across Gender and Sexual Orientation

Purpose: This study will shed light on what effects gender and sexual orientation have on friendships and will examine how these two categories, in various combinations, cause for different kinds of friendships to arise.

What Will You Do: You will be given a survey to fill out which will ask you how you define your gender and sexual orientation. The survey will contain a series of questions in various formats which will inquire into your friendships, first asking you to define, as best you can, the genders and sexual orientations of your friends. The point is for you to list friends who have different combinations of gender and sexual orientation. The questions will ask you about your feelings and experiences with these friendships. Certain participants will then be selected to take part in a focus group in which we will discuss the results of each member’s survey.

Benefits: This study has the potential to benefit the LGBT+ most out of anyone. Results could lead to findings about discrimination and might help find ways to prevent discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation from occurring by informing people on these issues.

Confidentiality: This study will remain purely confidential, names and contact information will not be reported or used in any way except for direct communication between you and I, should you be selected for the focus group.

By signing this document you agree to participate in my project " Friendships Across Gender and Sexual Orientation Humor", and you agree that I am allowed to use your results when explaining my research in a public forum.

    Researcher: Kayla Doerstling
Research Purpose: To look at and figure at how and why football has taken the place of baseball as America’s national pastime.
Project: My project focuses on how football has become more popular than baseball in America. Baseball has been called our national pastime, but it’s obvious that football has become the most popular sport in our country. This project looks at the factors that may have caused this shift, and tries to diagnose why this popularity shift has taken place. I researched many different sources and found four key things that may have contributed to the rise of football. They are broadcasting, the schedules, ratings, and the media. Now I am going to take the information I have found to the fans. I am going to talk to people that are avid fans of both sports – baseball and football. I will tell them what I have found, and then ask them what they think about it. By finding out what they have to say about this whole ordeal, and what has impacted them the most, I should be able to figure out how and why football has become the most popular sport.
Procedure: I am going to tell you the information that I have found from my research so far. I will pitch it to you, ask you a few simple questions, and then just let you run with it. You will be in a group with other baseball and football fans, and you are pretty much just going to share your opinions and feelings about the whole thing. Feel free to talk about whatever you want (within reason). I will be there with you, and it should be a very enjoyable conversation! I will write down the important and helpful things that you guys say, and use it for my project. If there is anything you do not want me to include, make sure you tell me.

Project: My project is to determine whether or not there is an affect with use of social media sites on college students social interaction. Information gathered from journals and a focus group will be analyzed to see if there is a positive or negative correlation.

Purpose: The use of social media sites has greatly increased over the past couple of years, and creation of new ways to interact with people has decreased the way we interact face to face with people. Society has become numb to the use of technology to interact with one another that we do not realize that we depend on it in our everyday lives. This experiment will help see whether we can still act the same around friends and family without the use of social media and technology to interact. It will also help show how much we depend on social media and technology.

Procedure: You will be participating in a week long experiment where you will willingly give up your phone for three days and not go on any social media sites on any form of technology. You will write in a journal given to you for those three days and explain how you feel about not being able to access social media sites at the palm of your hand, and any other affects that you have. You will receive your phone back and continue to write in the journal for the next three days describing how you feel with the use of the phone again and how you feel being able to access social media sites to interact with family and friends. On the last day you will meet in a focus group and answer questions and discuss with the others how you felt during the experiment.

Risks: There is no risks in this experiment. Your cell phone will be locked in small safe under the care of the researcher and will be given back to you anytime during the experiment if you no longer wish to continue in the experiment. I only ask for your time and honesty throughout the experiment.

  27. Project: My project’s goal is to discuss the different perceptions of CEO compensation for non-profit and for profit CEOs as well as where they come from.
Purpose: Many CEOs in today’s world are heavily criticized because of the large amounts of money they make each year. Some have been given large amounts of compensation even while their company is on the decline so it is easy to see how this upsets many. At the same time, non-profit organizations are at an extreme disadvantage because they are not able to offer their CEOs nearly as much as for profit companies offer. This causes them to lose out on the opportunity of acquiring top CEOs that could really benefit them and make a huge impact on society. I plan to discover the root of these perceptions of CEOs any why do people have them.

  28. Project: My project focuses on the effectiveness of environmental rhetoric. More specifically, I seek to discover the most effective environmental rhetoric for students. I hope to influence rhetors with my discoveries.

Purpose: The environment has always influenced the world, though it wasn't until recently when various problems began to affect society in addition to the environment. As more and more of the environment is destroyed, more severe, disastrous consequence will result. It is because of this that many different people have formed various movements in order to prevent further destruction. In order to persuade various audiences to take action for the movement, authors use various rhetorical strategies. It is here that I realized the lack of hard evidence of what environmental rhetoric best persuades students to become activists. I intend to discover what rhetoric is most effective for students. 29. Project: My project aims to analyze how the rhetoric of the steroid debate has changed over time, specifically looking at time periods of five years at a time. With hopes of finding specific incidents which strictly shape the conversational piece.

Purpose: It is already clear that in todays society, steroids maintain a negative rhetoric, especially in the worlds of sports. This experiment aims to find at which point does this conversation shift from the original purpose of steroids, to today's overall negative appeal. In order to do this properly, specific opinions throughout the time periods should be analyzed, finding a total representation of the time period, then comparing already established events to see how specific events have shaped this conversation. With this we can determine how specific events have shaped the overall conversation.

Procedure: The overall study will be a compilation of surveys forming a mass of data covering all designated time frames. Each Participant will fill out an anonymous survey, compiled of questions to determine the overall viewpoint the subject has on the steroid debate. Also the surveys will be taken by athletes and athletes alike to show accurate coverage of subject bias. Through a survey of roughly 15 questions subjects such as gender, athletic history, age, and familiarity with the conversation will be covered.

Risk: There are no risk involved with this experiment

Project: Television has captured much of our attention and time since it became popular in the 20th century, but has also taken much of our sleep time as studies have shown.

Purpose: Most of the studies already performed are based on children and/or outside the United States. This project is to collect data from young adults in America and see how much their sleep patterns are affected by television today.

Procedure: The entire procedure will take two weeks exactly. You will be given a survey for each day of the week (should take less than 10 minutes). For the first week there will be absolutely no restrictions. Live and act the way you normally would. The second week you will have to restrict yourself from a television screen past 8:00PM each night. The survey for each day will ask for things like: presleep activities (anything past 8:00PM), time spent on each activity, time of sleep onset, did you wake up at all during the night, if so how many times and about when, final wake up time, and an estimated scale of tiredness throughout the day (scale 1-10).

Risks: none. That is up to you to decide what you replace your television time with!

    Thank you!

By signing this document, I agree to participate in the survey and allow my participation to be made public.

    ENC 1102 -038
    Researcher: Vivienne Do
    Project:
My research is to go deeply investigate a vegan diet. More specifically, to determine common trends when transitioning from an omnivore diet to a vegan diet. Trends such as: nutritional values, food choice/value, food craving and food intolerance. I would like to discover if there’s a significant difference between an omnivore’ diet vs. a vegan’s diet. Which vitamin/minerals do vegans tend to lack of? Which area of nutrition values do they exceed? I also have a theory that vegans have a broader food plate compared to a typical American. My test students will be limited to College students, white females age 18-20. What are the common food cravings associated when transitioning from omnivore -> vegans?
    Purpose:
The purpose of my research is to test theories that I have about the vegan diet. It is also to help build awareness of veganism and the overall benefits it can bring to one’s lifestyle. Hopefully, it will also deviate the idea that ‘’vegans’’ are animal-lovers, rather- fully capable of understanding the nutritional values of the human body.
    Human study help:
You will be participating in various surveys to help accommodate validity to my study. You may be asked to be in a focus group for further questioning. There will be one survey inquiring about the knowledge vegan has on certain food choice, the same survey will be presented on an American college student. The next test will have a group A (vegans) test various ingredients and be asked if they can identify the items. Same will be done with group B (omnivores.) Finally, if you asked to participate in a focus group, you will be asked about your transitioning stage- what food cravings did you have to overcome? (Out of dairy, meat and animal-by products) Did you mood change? How was days did it take for your body to adjust? Also, did you develop any food allergies along the process?

Risk: There are no risk presented in this study. You must agree that you are not allergy to any of the common food samples I will have to test.

By signing below, you agree to take part of ‘’Exploration Veganism.’’ You also agree that the information you provide will be used in a public viewing paper.

  34. Project: My project is about the values of different audiences of anime and how it has influenced the development of anime.
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to find out how anime has changed over the years based on what people like and what they value out of anime. This would also help explain how successful anime is as a commodity, and its pattern of development so we can predict what the medium will be like in the future.
Procedure: My method for conducting this study is rather simple; I only wish to interview you and ask a few simple questions about the type of anime that you like, and what you value out of it.
Risks: There will be no risks involved in this interview.

Project: This research explores the effect that external circumstances create for a person that might influence their likeliness to engage in substance abuse. Examples of these developmental pillars are as followed: parenting style, peer-influence, current state of academics, etc. Along with social correlations, my research also explores the effects substance abuse has on education and if the actual substance abuse actually holds any fault in regards to a drop in academic performance.

Purpose: The purpose is to better understand individuals and how their substance abuse drive is created by external circumstances over the development of their lives, and also better understand drugs' consequence to academic standing. To find a general pattern to drug use and academic decline, then determine if poor grades can be attributed solely to the drug or levels of motivation created over time by social development which varies person by person.

Procedure: Within this survey you will encounter general questions such as age, gender, before it evolves into general probing into (that are not limited to): domestic life history, list of drugs used, frequency of drug use, an overview of academic performance (GPA and typical letter grade), etc.

Risk: None at all, all personal research inquiry responses will be anonymized for calculation and then destroyed permanently. This survey will contain multiple choice questions with a few fill in fields. After all data is collected and processed, all raw data will be destroyed accordingly. Responses are also anonymized by changing names into randomly assigned numbers after receipt.

By singing this document below you agree to divulge information towards my research, you also grant permission for me, as the researcher, to use any divulged information as data for my personal research.

Project: Exploring how to framing and rhetoric of different media outlets has affected the view of gay rights for various demographics.

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to examine these rhetorical strategies and their affect on the individual's opinion and view toward gay rights, and how this rhetoric can account for the change in public opinion toward gay rights in the past, and the continual change to come in the future.

Method: This research will involve individual subjects being shown a variety of media clips, and taking a survey in order to express their viewpoint and feelings the moments after the media is shown to them. There will then be a focus group held, which will discuss the overall affect of these different outlets of media on their opinion of gay rights.

Risk: There in no risk involved, though you may be subject to your own social beliefs being challenged and may lead to offense. This is in no way intended to favor one opinion or another, but rather to explore the rhetoric of the gay rights movement and its effectiveness.
