Revised Research Plan- Primary Research (Due before 11:59pm on Oct. 18th)

The revised research plan is where you will describe how you will occupy the niche you identified in the literature review. Spend some time reviewing how the literature review sections transition into methodology sections of the student research papers we have read this term, and then decide on a method most appropriate for your topic. We will talk extensively about the methods section of your paper in class over the next few meetings.

The Task: Write a planning document that outlines the following:
1) Your research question: Write a paragraph describing your question and how you arrived at that question. Remember, your question may have changed since you first started your project. Use sources from your literature review to describe your niche.

2) The data you plan to collect to answer the question--ie, who you plan to study.

3) How you will go about doing that research. Be as specific as possible about the number of research subjects, how the research subjects will be chosen, and what you will do (interview, survey, observation, focus group, and so on). We will continue to work on this in class.

  1. Much has been written about the rise of football and the decrease in popularity of baseball in America. Researchers have looked at the numbers and the history of the numbers, but not much has been written about why this shift has happened and what exactly caused it. Through the research I did, I found four things that may have contributed to this. But no one has tried to put the pieces together or find what has really caused football to grow so much. That is my question: how and why has football taken the place of baseball as “America’s national pastime?”
In order to answer the question, I plan to ask baseball and football fans themselves. I am going to present them with the information I have found, and see what they have to say about it. I will ask them what they think has contributed to this shift, and what has impacted them the most. I plan on leaving it pretty open, and letting them discuss amongst themselves. This way I’ll be able to sit and listen, and I think it is more interesting when they can just straight up talk instead of a question and answer format.
Like I said, I plan on doing a focus group. The focus group will consist of my brothers and his roommates. They are all avid baseball and football fans, and it is going to be interesting to talk to them. I also want to talk to my Dad and my little brother, who are also avid fans of both sports. This way I will be able to talk to the “newer generation” of sports fans (my little brother), the college kid generation (my brother and his roommates), and the generation that has been around longer and seen more (my Dad). They are going to be really fun to talk to about this and I should get really interesting and useful information.

  2. Very little research has been done on why transportation has become so stagnated. My research has come up with some possible explanations to this; public opinion, politics, budgets, or our culture as a whole. Unfortunately though my research was talking about transportation issues that effect all forms of transportation, new and old. This may lead to some issues that have not affected previous transit arise to effect the new forms of transit.
For my study i plan on doing a two phase project. The first phase would be a baseline questionnaire disbursed around campus to students and adults. From this data i will get to understand the participant and their view of transportation and acceptance of new ideas. From this data i can see what the general public may know about the issue and some of their views and concerns about these new transportation methods. Phase two will be a focus group of participants from phase one. This group will encompass the most knowledgable of the participants and bring them together to discuss the issue more throughly.

  3. 1.) The question that I have arrived at: how does the narrative structure in video games correlate to how narrative is defined by Joseph Campbell's monomyth -- the idea of the hero's journey. I'm looking at this in order to support video games as a credible, engaging, and unique narrative medium -- something which they are not recognized as in today's society. Supporting me in this niche are articles such as one by written Joseph Ostenson which looks at how video games should be implemented in a classroom setting; and another by Teun Dubbelman which looks at how video games do indeed relate to movies and TV shows, along with how player role and immersion tie in with the narrative itself. Thus, my job is to look at video games through the lens of Joseph Campbell's monomyth to bring further credibility to video games as a narrative medium.

2.) To accomplish this, I'll be looking at two games through the lens of Joseph Campbell's monomyth: “Beyond:Two Souls” by Quantic Dream (dev studio), and “The Last of Us” by Naughty Dog (dev studio). These two titles are an excellent portrayal of the hero's journey, yet are varied enough from each other as to not be redundant.

3.) This will be mainly an observational research test. What is key to this assessment: First, to obtain extensive knowledge of Joseph Campbell's monomyth in order to properly evaluate the games I'm looking at. To do this I'll read the book, do research on its applications in film, etc.; Second, I'll need to replay both titles to refresh my memory of them and to take notes of key aspects of said titles that exhibit the qualities of the hero's journey.

  4. There have been few studies done to show the significance of the child-doctor relationship in the medical field. My particular interest is focusing on how the improvement of the patient-doctor interaction can positively contribute to a child’s health and wellness. I examined parental influences, doctor influences, and the fear of doctors to understand my inquiry question. I have found in multiple sources that there are ways to help the parent and the child alleviate such fears of doctor visits. Some ways include preparing the child beforehand and using creativity such as magic tricks to help lighten the stress between the child and the doctor. Other sources focused on the trust that the child develops with the doctor during the visits and if the doctor and parent influences the child’s behavior. Although these sources have helped me gain knowledge about the conversation, I have yet to discover if the improvement of the child-doctor interaction will benefit the child’s lifestyles. My question is: If children can develop a more positive attitude toward doctors, will this cultivate healthier lifestyles and more avid visits to doctor's offices?

I plan to conduct a survey that will have questions followed by rating scales to determine the answers. I have not yet determined what those questions will be. I plan to give the surveys to about 35 or more students that are 18-22 years of age. This way, I can reflect on how my subjects have perceived doctors in their past experiences. The research subjects will be chosen from friends and psychology students who are in need of hours of being a participant for other researchers. I also want to pick some of the surveys that significantly relate to my research and have a focus group that will talk about these issues. I will also try to go to Nemours Children’s Hospital to actually see the child-doctor interaction for myself to gain better insight on my research topic.

  5. My research topic started out asking if and how sexual orientation, gender expression, and biological sex are related. This is a broad issue that I often wonder about. As time went by, I began to realize what I’m even more interested in is how those factors influence friendships and interactions between people. I realized that I wonder about this everyday of my life. Therefore, my research question came to be “how do sexual orientation and gender affect friendships?” Specifically I’ll be looking into aspects such as values, interaction, communication, intimacy, expectations, and fulfillment. Research on this topic is very limited.
I plan on studying college students of various genders and sexual orientations, so that hopefully I can get the perspective of individuals of every possible combination of gender and sexual orientation. The ideal participant will have close friendships with other people of various combinations of gender and sexual orientation.
The first part of my research will involve giving out a survey to large number of college students. To find subjects, I will contact the psychology department to find students who need to participate in a study. I will also post on the Equal page to find LGBT+ individuals to survey. The survey will ask various questions about their friendships including rankings for values, interactions, communication, and other facets of friendship. The survey will include rankings, free response, and other types of questions. To follow up I will choose a random sample within my sample to do a focus group with where we will discuss survey results and I will ask more personal and in depth questions.

  6. As my research began I set out to find scholarly articles regarding campus architecture and the conversations taking place within. I quickly discovered a common viewpoint that shown prevalent across many articles-- U.S. higher education institutions are currently failing in terms of design and layout. This perspective shared by experts in the field accounts for a large portion of the current conversation on campus architecture.

I plan to add to the discussion by taking a different angle on the issue and comparing my findings with the expert's personal opinions. My methods of research will include observational field studies in which I will personally gather information and analyze structures on the campus of UCF. With my personal observations I will compare what the architects are stating about current campus design and address whether or not my studies strengthens existing claims or challenges the expert's ideas.

However, with taking this defensive approach against the majority, in addition to my inexperience and lack of reputation in the industry, my personal perspective alone would be irrelevant to the conversation. But, with the voice of the public, and statistical evidence backing my claims, my studies could propose an opposing perspective to the topic of U.S. college design. So to test my own novice claims I will conduct a survey asking fellow students at UCF two simple question; "Do you like the way UCF looks; and is the layout efficient for your personal travels?" The results gathered from this survey will provide a public perspective on the matter and demonstrates the appreciation by those most effected by the issue at hand.

As I have been interested in this particular field study I will soon be conducting, I have already noticed my attention for UCF educational buildings rising. As I pass by a building I began to question the aesthetics and functionality the design provides and how it relates to the articles I have read. At first glimpse it looks as if what the experts are saying is certainly true; designs are unrelated from one building to another and the layout of the campus does not provide the easiest travels. But it will take much more research and analyzing to fill this gap in the conversation.

This conversation regarding University and Higher Education facilities in the U.S. and their current architectural state is missing one distinct viewpoint, the view of those most directly affected—the students. These students inhabiting the campuses themselves are not heard and are an essential voice in the conversation. My study will provide this voice and hopefully contribute to the discussion for future researchers to analyze.

  7. Distressed by pressure from much of the world, the Catholic Church is once again facing a roadblock in its growth. Overcoming the popular culture of the time is nothing new the Church. Historically, the legality of the religion in Rome, Martin Luther’s teachings, the rise of the Church of England, are all issues the Catholic Church has been forced to deal with. What challenges does the Church have now? More importantly, how well has the Church responded to those challenges? Focusing on the topics of homosexuality and gay-marriage, the question I have come to is this; how has the church responded to the increased homosexual and gay-marriage movement? As well as the discovering the response of society.

I will begin my research by releasing a survey to people that identify as part of the LGBT community, Catholics who have left the church, as well as current Catholics. The survey will assist me in identifying the best candidates to form a focus group. In this focus group, we will discuss how individual viewpoints and perspectives have changed.

Specifically the survey will separate those whom would be serious in a focus group and those that may have too much of a heated opinion from either side. For a focus group to work, I need cooperative individuals who are willing share their opinion in a respectful manner. I’ve never held a focus group before, therefor, pending continue discussion I might change my plan of having eight members. I will use various readings with the focus group in an attempt to get the group to understand the situation rather than perceived misconceptions.

  8. The Environmental Movement has influenced the world for generations. However, it was not until more recently that various problems have begun to have dire effects on both society and the environment. Because of these problems, many people have taken up the modern environmental movement, or the ecological restoration movement. People have realized that if these various environmental problems are not remedied, more disastrous effects will affect society. In order to persuade others to join the movement, authors use a series of common topics and commonplaces to appeal to various audiences. However, among these audiences, there is few specifics on what strategies appeal best to the new generations: the students.
I intend to collect information on what environmental rhetoric appeals best to students, persuading them to take up the movement. In order to best collect such data, I plan to form a focus group, as I feel a focus group is the most efficient way to collect quality information for the subject.
To go more in depth, I plan on having the focus group consist of five or six people, all of which members of the environmental group on campus. I will present each of them with a few articles, perhaps three articles at the very least, and ask them to rate the effectiveness of each article, then, after I have recorded their individual thoughts, I will gather them all into one spot and have them discuss the articles among each other. I will do my best to lead their conversation with questions, though I do not have experience in this. I will make sure their conversation remains respectful and does not turn into a heated debate of sorts. After I have the data, I will analyze it and select the most effective strategy for students as well as point out interesting concepts that were brought up in the focus group.

  9. Since it became common in most households, television has increasingly absorbed our time, even our sleep time. Studies show later bedtimes, mainly in children and young adults, and less sleep in general. The gap in the research is almost all these studies have taken place everywhere but the United States. Only one research study found took place in the U.S. This is a problem since America is, arguably, the most television consuming place on Earth and the television started here. In the end, television is now looked at as a “zeitgeber,” a regulator of one’s “biological clock [cycle]” (Yamazaki 2007). The focus of my research project is to examine how much television still affects television sleep patterns in young adults in America today. I plan on specifically studying UCF students who have a television in their bedroom. I will have twenty people, ten boys and ten girls, each do a journal. The entire process will take two weeks. The first week will be a normal, do what you normally do, kind of week where the students will live their normal lives. The second week will be no television allowed past 8:00PM. What the students will be writing down will be: presleep activities starting at 8, time of sleep onset, wake up time, and scale 1-10 of how sleepy they were throughout the day. Overall the speculation of all this experiment is still undecided for sure and has many things to be adjusted.

  10. If history has taught us anything regarding the wrong-doing of government programs, it's that the government program officials will wait until the contingency has been removed in order to admit any foul-play. Great examples of this include World War II and other huge wars. But the current NSA's unconstitutional actions are not so simple. Because the war on terror is ongoing, asymmetrical warfare, it is a valid assumption that it will never officially be "finished;" therefore, the NSA's actions fall into a category of illegitimacy that may never be acknowledged by administrative officials.

Another very important part of the equation has yet to be touched on, however. In the past, there has always been a pressing force of public opposition which remained heated until the government made an official statement of wrong-doing. Upon examining this generation, however, there seems to be an utter lack of concern regarding the NSA's recent privacy breaches. Is generational apathy the missing piece of the NSA puzzle, which will be enough to keep this administration from every admitting to any illegality with these NSA programs?

  11. I have anaylzed several research methods that have explored the influence of certain factors on public opinion regarding gay rights. Throughout this research, I have found certain explainations were used more often than others. These have included the media's influence over indiviudal opinion, the ways that change in rhetoric have changed the direction of the gay rights movement, and the increase of acceptance for gays due to an increase in familiarity. This had led my research question into a different direction. How have these individual factors combined have changed the opinions of so many people. in our nation through the past years. My goal is to show this intermingling occuring between these factors, and see which demographic it is most effective towards.
I am planning to do a survey with a variety of demographics involved (religious vs. non religious, older generations vs. younger generations, etc). I will ask each participant if their opinion on gay rights has changed over the past decade. I will then ask them their religious background, if they know people who are gay, lesbian or bisexual, if they watch certain outlets of media, where they get their news.
This survey will give me an indication of the collective reasons why this change is occuring.

  12. There has been substantial research done on why violence exists in the NFL and whether or not its truly necessary. However, there have mostly been assumptions about the fans' opinion of it. Furthermore, much of what appears to be enjoyed and encouraged by fans is actually skewed by the media and the NFL itself. Therefore, I wish to research violence in the NFL from an unbiased fan perspective. What do fans think about the violence? Is it necessary for the sake of the game? Can the game be enjoyed without it?

I plan to study NFL fans, hopefully ones of different demographics; specifically gender and age. I wish to get each of their opinions on the violence and see how they feel about it. See whether or not they like it, would watch the game without it, prefer more, etc.

I will start with a very general survey asking some of the basic, aforementioned questions. After that, I will hand select some of the participants to conduct a focus group in order to get a really good, in depth idea of how fans feel about NFL violence.

  13. Religion and science have had a complex relationship for centuries. They are often topics of controversy when talked about at the same time. This interested me and led me to my research question. How has modern technology impacted religion? Rabbi Fried believes that modern technology has decreased humans spirituality. Making us more robotic and less sensitive to human emotion.

I plan to study individuals who have had their religious belief impacted on by modern religion. I want to know how it has impacted their belief; has it increased their belief or decreased. I want to study the religious leaders to see if modern technology has had any effect on them as well.

I will start by taking a survey of students who are in a religion/theology class. I will ask them questions so that their answers reflect wether or not and how modern technology has effected religion. I will survey 10-15 students to get a solid answer as to how technology impacts religion.

  14. much has been written about how sports can have a positive effect of the lives of both men and women. women however havent always had the same oppourtunities as men. my studdy aims to show how title IX has not only benefited women in sports but has also helped them gain more oppourtunities in the workplace. my study will first consist of a personality test to try and see if there are any differences in the personalities of people who play sports vs those who do not. the second part of my study will include a focus group consisting of 14 women. 7 women that grew up before title IX and 7 women who grew up after the passing of title IX. i will as a series of questions to not only see how sports has affected these womens lives and how it has impacted their ability to gain rewarding carreers but to see how these women from two different eras view how women are perceived by employers and just in the community in general.

  15. 1.While first developing my research question I decided to look into whether or not the stereotypes of dog people and cat people were true. I also wanted to question whether or not pet owners’ personalities reflect their pets’ breed’s personality. After analyzing previous studies it became clear that there is some truth to the stereotypes. However, I noticed that no one had compared their intelligence or emotional state/happiness. Therefore, instead of questioning whether the stereotypes were true I chose to question whether these people differ on an intellectual and emotional level.
2.The subjects in my study will be pretty much be anyone willing to participate on campus, which is mostly going to be college students. I also might try and include family members who are willing to participate as well. I am not limiting it to only cat people and dog people as I will have the option of one being both or neither on the survey I plan to create.
3.As I just mentioned I will be creating a survey with four parts. The first part will be a general intelligence test, the second part will be a satisfaction with life scale, the third part will be a scale on one’s positive and negative thoughts, and the fourth part will determine the subject’s personality and their pet’s breed/preferred pet’s breed. I then might form a focus group to get more in depth results. I plan on surveying at least 30 subjects randomly.

  16. My research question is: How are children affected (positively or negatively) by their multicultural background? Research has been done on parents of interethnic marriage, but studies seem to be restricted to the parents. My goal is to close this gap and figure out the minds of the children.

For my research, I plan to question multicultural college students who feel like their background has changed a lot for them and can do much to change future possibilities, whether it be a beneficial change or not. I want to know if they experience difficulties in finding out who they are or what ethnicity they side with most or if it’s a balanced blend of everything.

I will go about my research by conducting a survey and pulling people who are most qualified into a focus group to study and interview individually.

-Are you decided about your major? If so, what is it?

    -What is your ethnic background?

-Did you choose this major yourself? If so, why?

-Do you have a passion for this study? If so, what is it?

-Is there something that happened to you in the past that made you want to study this? If so, what is it?

-Is this something that your mother or father studied in?

-Are there any positive influences that helped you with your decision making?

-Are there any negative influences that helped you with your decision making?

My research question seeks to not only delve into the conversation regarding student nutrition and dietary habits of those attending college, but also the motivation regarding these dietary choices. I have collected many research articles that illustrate the negative effects of the average college student's diet which is built primarily around convenience, inexpensiveness, and availability.

My research question remains largely unchanged.

My data is compiled from research articles and popular sources (often university newspapers) regarding nutrition, student motivation, dietary habits and student athletics. I plan to conduct a light survey regarding the nutritional habits of students on campus at UCF.

The bulk of my research is compiled from research articles and popular sources, but I plan to conduct my personal survey (a contributor to my research) by choosing a highly trafficked area around campus and posing students who are willing to participate with questions regarding their nutrition, health, and motivation for the choices they make.

Throughout my research, I began to notice that there was something missing. In most of the journals there were significant amounts of research done, but the researchers failed to push further in order to get answers as to what the motives were behind food choices. I would like to research the various food choice motives and go into details as to what attracts students to certain foods. I came to this conclusion by simply reading my articles. I constantly found myself asking, “Why?”, as if the article could answer me but the journals simply did not contain further information.
I plan on studying college students, and categorizing the results from those who live on-campus, and those who live off-campus.
I plan on going about my research by creating a survey with a series of questions. I want to have at least seven on-campus and seven off-campus students to take my survey in order to get a reasonable amount of data.

  20. My project, and my question at hand, have really changed since I first began looking in to things. My first question was why do people find funny the things that they find funny, which in itself is a tongue twister, though I have developed and changed it to what are factors that cause people to have different senses of humor? Not only does this change the interest in my question, but it also, on a more trivial note, sounds more professional and just all around better.

I plan on having my test subjects watch three different comedic videos and fill out a survey in relation to these videos and how funny they found them, what surprised them in the videos, and a few other questions. Something simple that will hopefully keep my test subjects entertained!

I plan on having five test subjects that are from different walks of life, but all college aged, to see if I can draw conclusions about different factors in family life or parents income and how they relate to their senses of humor.

  21. My research question is how do rationality and religion correlate with one another? How does this reasonability or rationality effect one's belief and devotion to their religion? More specifically, what are people's reasoning when it comes to practicing their faith?

The data I plan on collecting will be coming from a questionnaire that I will be conducting on a religious focus group.

My focus group will consist of no more than twelve people and no less than ten. This questionnaire will find out why people are truly religious, whether it be due household traditions, biblical scriptures, the morals, etc. I will hand out a number of papers with the questionnaire on it, the questionnaire will consist of five questions that asks you to rate your religious beliefs from 1-10.

  22. My research question goes into violence in video games and the affects that it has on players. What I noticed as I went through previous research was that most research was done without regarding what the players thought about the games or their own actions. I feel that this is a very important part of research because it keeps us from misinterpreting the actions of our participants. What I wanted to “answer” with my research was what peoples’ actual perceptions of video games are and how people feel about violence in video games, rather than gauging aggression levels after gameplay. I feel that hearing people’s perceptions on the topic and see how they feel about the information that has been published in previous research. Also, I wish to bring together groups of people who are involved and who aren’t involved in video games because that is also something that has not been done previously with this topic.
I plan to collect first, how involved the participant is with video games to determine where they fall in that respect. I then wish to ask about their opinions on violence and violent video games to learn how people view them and also how the two sides may oppose each other with their answers to these questions.
What I plan to do is to take a preliminary survey to gain a large amount of data regarding the subject and compile that with some basic results. I then wish to bring together a small focus group out of those people, and conduct a group discussion on the subject to get a little bit deeper into their answers and also see their reactions to information introduced from previous research.

  23. My research question explores the antisocial behavior in college students, and what impacts this type of behavior. While researching this topic I found that there were many factors that played a role in depression. In addition, I also came to the conclusion that a lot of surveys provided more quantitative rather than qualitiative data. This was helpful when seeing the numbers of students now depressed in college, but was a difficult source to use when trying to explain what students feel contributes to their overall load of stress. I found a survey online that asked students to rate different situations based on how much stress it brought into their life.
I plan to ask a multitude of randomly selected college students a 4 year schools to share the amounts of stress they feel they endure in their lives. I then want to ask about their coping mechanisms and how effective they find these coping methods.
After this survey has been completed by at least 30 students, I will compare all of the data and see what similarities are present. I would like to see what coping mechanisms students find most effective and what stressors these students think contribute to most of their stress. Overall, I would like to see how this survey's data correlates to information I have found in my sources and to identify if levels of stress are increasing through out time.

Beauty pageants have become a growing entertainment source amongst Americans today. Although these competitions serve as a great source of public entertainment, I am curious to discover whether or not these competitions unintentionally undermine women in a degrading matter. The question I plan to extend upon in my research is: Is there any correlation between the negative representation of women in society and beauty pageants? I arrived at this question when thinking of my love for viewing beauty pageants as a child. This love also brought an unrealistic stereotypical view of what women should look like to my mind, causing for a large decrease in self-confidence due to not having all the same attributes as these women.

To test my question upon whether or not these competitions are positive or degrading, I plan to survey ten individuals, five males and five females. I plan to interview these ten individuals at random around the UCF campus. They will be shown eight different words/phrases, four positive and four negative, and asked to rate each on a scale of 1-10 on their opinions of the words relation to beauty pageants.
